The next club on our pre-season analysis is Basford United, managed by Steve Chettle.
The Nottingham based club endured a successful first season in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League, finishing in 7th place.
After their impressive 2017/18 promotion campaign and racking up 100 points to finish top of the Northern South League, Basford wanted to prove that they could do more than just survive in the 18/19 season, and they did just that.
Basford won 18 of their league matches, drawing seven and losing 15, not a bad first season at all, especially with the club finish 7th.
Another positive for Chettle’s men to take on board will be their impressive goal scoring statistics. Basford scored a whopping 82 goals last season, the same number as table toppers Farsley Cetlic.
However, one major negative that Steve Chettle will have taken from last season will be their poor defensive record. United conceded 67 goals, the most goals conceded by a side in the top half of the table. That is something the club will be looking to improve on before the start of the 2019/20 campaign.
According to the club’s statistics page, the first team averaged 2.1 goals scored per game, however conceded 1.6 goals per game on average.
The only incomings so far at Greenwich Avenue have been two midfielders; Josh Law and Callum Chettle (son of manager Steve Chettle). Both come with pro experience, with Josh Law spending time at Motherwell and Oldham, whilst Callum spent time with Peterborough.
So, Basford United will be looking to build on what was an impressive first season in the Northern Premier League and will be hoping to improve on their weak defensive statistics.
Lancaster City face Basford United on August 24th at Greenwich Avenue at 3pm.
