After gaining a comprehensive 3-1 win away at Warrington Town on Saturday, Morpeth Town sit on top of the division. Lancaster sit 4th in the table after an opening day 2-1 home victory over Stafford Rangers.
Morpeth ended last season as the champions of the Northern East league. With an opening day win Morpeth got their season underway in the right fashion. However, they endured some ups and downs in pre-season playing six games, winning three and losing three. One thing was for sure, they didn’t struggle to hit the back of the net, scoring 18 goals during their pre-season.
Morpeth’s last three league fixtures:
17/8/19 – Warrington Town 1-3 Morpeth Town
27/4/19 – Wisbech Town 0-1 Morpeth Town
22/4/19 – Morpeth Town 3-1 Marske United
One to Watch
The one to watch for the newly promoted Morpeth Town is robust center forward Liam Henderson. Henderson will be looking to open his account for the season against City, having grabbed an assist on the opening day victory over Warrington. Henderson has been the top scorer for the highway men for the two of the three previous campaigns and will be looking to grab hold of the leagues golden boot this season.
This will be the first time that Morpeth Town and Lancaster City have squared off. With the newly promoted Morpeth looking to make their mark on the league and City looking to push on from a campaign which saw them finish 12th it will be interesting to see which team takes the initiative and seizes the chance to gain a first ever victory over the other team.
Their latest transfer incomings have come in the form of Marcus Giles from New Hartley and Shabz Mohammed formally of Stockton Town and Carlisle Under 19s. They have also added forward Ben Harmison from South Shields and midfielder Michael McKeown arriving from West Auckland to their ranks.
Greek ‘keeper and trialist Dimitris Tsapalos signed for the Highwaymen during pre-season, with experienced shot stopper Dan Lowson arriving permanently after a loan spell last season.
Kris Thackray and Sean Reid are the other new additions for Morpeth Town.
